On Friday I took Ella to Texas Children's Hospital to see an ophthalmologist. I was worried because her right pupil never dilates as big as her left and it seemed like her depth perception was off on the right side. Since she was 6 weeks premature, I was worried about her vision. I was very happy to be told that she is fine! The doctor did lots of tests with the lights on, then off, then on again to look at her pupils and she agreed that the right one never dilates to the same size as the left but some people just have a weird pupil. She said its common in people with brown eyes but it isn't as obvious because they don't have the color contrast that people with light colored eyes have. She said Ella has beautiful gray eyes and that's why we can see the difference so well. When the pupils are different sizes the doctor usually looks for other symptoms of a syndrome (I'm not even going to pretend I remember the name of that syndrome), which are the eyes being 2 different colors, one eye being bigger than the other, and one side of the face sweating while the other side does not. Ella didn't have any of these symptoms and her eyes contract normally to light, so she ruled that out. She kept saying, "I think it's physiological and she was just born this way." Every time she said it I wanted to break out with "she's on the right track baby, she was born this way!" I decided that would not be appropriate :)
She did dilate her eyes to get a better look. Ella did not like those drops but got over it very quickly. We have to go back in 2 months to have a neuroopthamologist look at her eyes to make sure she's ok and then we won't have to go back.
Ella enjoyed her trip with just Mommy and loved the attention she was getting from the doctor!
Here she is with her dilated pupils :)
